What Are Its Effects on Gas Engines?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the increasing global population and advancing technology, the demand for energy is rising every day, and the importance of renewable energy sources is growing due to global warming and environmental pollution. Therefore, energy production from waste and sewage has become a crucial topic due to its contribution to energy generation and its environmentally friendly nature. Additionally, landfills and wastewater treatment facilities face numerous potential challenges in biogas production and electricity generation systems. One of these challenges is the siloxane compounds that emerge in biogas production from waste and sewage. Siloxane compounds typically enter the biogas production process through cosmetics and chemical cleaning products, mixing with water and waste. If not separated, they can reach the gas engines, crystallizing in the mechanical components like piston valves and spark plug heads, causing damage in the combustion chamber.<\/p>\n<h3>What is Siloxane?<\/h3>\n<p>Siloxane is a chemical compound consisting of units in the form of R2SiO (R = H or HC group).<\/p>\n<p>Silicones are macromolecules that contain a polymer backbone consisting of silicon atoms and alternative silicon and oxygen atoms with organic substituents such as methyl, phenyl, or vinyl. The term siloxane is derived from the words silicon, oxygen, and alkane. Siloxanes are volatile, liquid compounds that tend to be quite persistent in their environments.<\/p>\n<p>Siloxanes are chemical compounds found in products such as cosmetics, deodorants, water-repellent windshield coatings, food additives, and some soaps. They are commonly used to soften cosmetic products or as chemical building blocks for silicone-based rubbers and oils. They are also used in the construction industry as waterproof coatings for materials like wall bricks.<\/p>\n<h3>Effects of Siloxane on Gas Engines in Energy Production from Waste and Sewage:<\/h3>\n<p>During energy production from biogas generated in wastewater treatment facilities and landfills, one of the components that can harm gas engines is siloxanes. They wear down the internal parts of the machinery, shortening their lifespan, and increase operational costs due to repeated oil changes and internal component replacements.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike sulfurs, silicones do not react with water to form acids. However, during combustion, siloxane molecules break down, releasing oxygen and silicon.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, silicates that accumulate in the combustion chamber (mainly in the upper jacket), cylinder heads, and on the surfaces of valves combine with other elements that form silica and other crystalline compounds. These deposits wear down and deform various internal components of the engines.<\/p>\n<p>Although each machine manufacturer sets its own limits, the permissible silicon content for production engines should generally be &lt; 5 mg\/Nm\u00b3 for proper operation. A higher content can lead to silica deposition problems and the burning of exhaust valves. Since gas engines operate at high RPMs, their moving parts require both precise static and dynamic balancing. This silica accumulation can cause severe damage within them.<\/p>\n<p>In general, effects like wear and deformation disrupt the precision and smoothness of engine parts, leading to knocking and reduced engine lifespan. It also shortens the oil life of the engine. Therefore, it is crucial to eliminate these compounds.<\/p>\n<h3>Separation of Siloxane:<\/h3>\n<p>To remove these compounds, existing systems typically employ techniques that generally involve one or two stages. These include extreme cooling, adsorption on activated carbon\/silica gel, graphite filters, certain types of resins, and washing with specific reactive substances (e.g., methanol, sulfuric acid, and hydrocarbon mixtures). Filtration and separation systems can incur very high installation and operational costs for facilities. The most commonly used and cost-effective method is adsorption using activated carbon.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, siloxane compounds are one of the undesirable compounds in gas facilities. They originate from cosmetics and detergent materials that mix with waste and sewage in biogas production and, if not filtered, crystallize in the combustion chamber along with heat, causing wear and deformation. Additionally, they shorten the oil life of the engine. Currently, there is no economically viable system that completely filters them out.
