What are Original / OEM / Alternative Spare Parts?
All spare parts used in gas engines and other motors are produced using a specific coding system. Instead of manufacturing the entire engine in a single factory, the manufacturer brand can have many parts produced at various locations at a lower cost or include an already produced part in their engine. This situation leads to the differentiation between original, OEM, and alternative parts, as well as the use of common parts among various engine brands.
What are Original and OEM?
For example, when a motor manufacturer brand like MWM decides to use a Bosch part while producing an engine, they collaborate with Bosch to have that part manufactured as a subcontractor under the MWM brand. When you buy the motor and a part fails, if you purchase the MWM branded part, it is considered Original; if you purchase the Bosch branded part, it is referred to as OEM.
In another scenario, if MWM has Bosch produce a designed part at a lower cost than what they could produce it for themselves, Bosch can also manufacture that same part under its own brand as a spare part. In this case, the MWM branded product is Original, while the Bosch branded product is OEM.
In yet another scenario, if the MWM brand likes a motor part from Bosch and buys the model to start using it in their engine, while Bosch continues to produce that part as the original designer and manufacturer, the MWM branded part is Original, and the Bosch branded part is OEM.
For a part to be classified as OEM, there must be no performance difference between it and the Original part.
What is an Alternative Part?
An alternative part can be defined as a commonly used motor spare part manufactured by third-party producers based on the model. Compatibility and quality of use can vary depending on the manufacturer.
However, there are a few exceptional situations. For example, if brand A’s motor uses a part from brand B’s spare part manufacturer, and brand C also acquires the same part for use in its own engine while also manufacturing it, the parts will be classified as follows: the part for brand A will be Original, the part for brand B will be OEM, and the part for brand C will be seen as Alternative. Conversely, from brand C’s perspective, brand B’s part is OEM and brand A’s part is Alternative. In essence, there is no difference between these three parts.
When purchasing alternative spare parts, it is essential to ensure that the part meets minimum quality and performance standards.
OEM and alternative products for a motor part can be identified through the reference number of the part.
