What is a Rocker Arm?
The rocker arm is a part that allows the valves to open and close in internal combustion engines. It is located at the top of the engine’s cylinder block and transmits the movement received from the camshaft to the valves. Other names for rocker arms include piano, rocker lever and rocker finger.
Working principle of the rocker arm:
- The camshaft rotates and the cams apply pressure to the rocker arms.
- The rocker arms move upward with this pressure.
- The upward movement of the rocker arms pushes the valve stems, allowing the valves to open.
- The camshaft continues to rotate and the cams pull pressure from the rocker arms.
- The rocker arms move downwards under the influence of the springs.
- The downward movement of the rocker arms releases the valve stems, allowing the valves to close.
Duties of rocker arms:
- Ensuring that the valves open and close at the right time.
- To ensure efficient operation of the engine by ensuring the valves are fully opened and closed.
- To prevent wear and tear of the valves.
If the rocker arms fail:
- Engine performance decreases
- The sound of the engine increases.
- The engine becomes difficult to start.
- Valves may be damaged.
It is important to check the rocker arms regularly and replace them when necessary.
